  • Massachusetts History
  • Early Europeans arrived, bringing disease with them. Diseases such as smallpox killed about 90% of the Native Americans in Massachusetts at the time.
  • The Pilgrims
  • Salem Witch Trials
  • The Pilgrims arrived and settled in Plymouth in 1620. With the help of local Native Americans such as Squanto, the Pilgrims survive the harsh winter. The following year, the first Thanksgiving takes place in Massachusetts.

  • Salem was populated mostly by Puritans, a very religious group with strict rules who believed in the devil. When people in town started acting strangely, it was believed they were victims of witchcraft. By the end of 1693, 24 people were accused and convicted of witchcraft and killed or jailed.

  • The Revolutionary War begins in Massachusetts with the Battles of Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775.
