Storyboard That Copyright Policy* - Main Ideas

• You cannot make money with Storyboard That creations unless you purchase an account for at least 1 year.


• You can present your Storyboard That creations that were made on a Free Trial or Freebie account, if it is not-for-profit. Remember, you will not be able to edit creations made on a Free Trial after it expires unless you purchase.

Rule #1: Limits of Commercial Use

• If you have a free account, you can’t be making money with your Storyboard That creations.


• You must purchase an account for at least one year with Storyboard That to be able to use the storyboards you create for publication.


• Any premium account (Individual, Educational, or Corporate) purchased for at least one year can go ahead and publish!


• Inform your publisher that you do not own the rights to the illustrations. You must cite Storyboard That in your publication.


• We do not count reviews of Storyboard That as commercial use.

Rule #2: We Own the Art

• Storyboard That retains the rights to all of its raw imagery.

Rule #3: Storyboard That is NOT a Clip-Art Repository

Storyboard That is a creation platform, not a place for purchasing or collecting stock images. You may not take individual art assets and resell them as original work. For instance, you can’t just take one of our awesome dragons, put it on a coffee mug, and then sell it to the internet.

If you want to merchandise or market with Storyboard That images make sure:

• You follow Rule #1 - you must purchase an account for at least 1 year.
• You must use your compositions, not our individual assets. An art asset is any single scene, character, or item that you can find in the Storyboard Creator.

By composition, we mean a combination of at least three assets. For instance, a character standing in a scene and saying something is a composition. The character alone, even if it is posed, is not a composition.

Rule #4: Citation

We are happy for people to share their Storyboard That creations on social media and other not-for-profit platforms. All we ask in return is that Storyboard That is credited anytime the art is seen publicly. The proper text is included on all storyboards by default; as long as you don't crop that text out, you’ll be fine!

Approved Citations:

• Ensure that “Create your own at Storyboard That” is visible or include a direct link to the website.


• Reference "Created with Storyboard That"




Photos for Class or Photos for Work

• When using the Photos for Class or Photos for Work integration, the Storyboard Creator has cited these automatically on the bottom of your storyboard.

Can I post a storyboard I made to my blog or social media?

Can I use my storyboards in a children’s book I’m writing?

Can I publish my storyboards in any sort of publication?

Can I use Storyboard That for internal business purposes if I created the storyboards on a Free Trial?

Yes, you may use the storyboards you created for internal use. However, remember, your Free Trial account expires after 14 days and you won't be able to edit your storyboards unless you upgrade to a paid account. Please cite Storyboard That. See above for citation instructions.

Can I use the storyboards I created on a Free Trial for not-for-profit use?

If it is for not-for-profit use, you do not need to pay. However, be aware that after your account expires you will need to pay in order to edit your storyboards.

Do I need to purchase an account to present in a non-profit setting?

No, but you need to cite Storyboard That. See above for citation instructions. Remember, your Free Trial account expires after 14 days and you won't be able to edit your storyboards unless you upgrade to a paid account.

Can you review a contract for me?

If you need us to review a contract for publication of your storyboard, you must purchase an account at least $500. If we do not come to an agreement on your contract, we will refund you for any unused portion of the bill.
