Activity Overview
Character maps are a helpful tool for students to use as they're reading, although they can also be used after completing a book. In this activity, students will create a character map of the characters in Freak the Mighty, paying close attention to the physical attributes, and the traits of both major and minor characters. They can also provide detailed information regarding the challenges the character faces, the challenges the character imposes, and the importance of the character to the plot of the story.

How To Compare Max and Kevin’s Characters in Freak The Mighty
Investigate Capabilities and Challenges
Describe each character's unique strengths and flaws. Max places a high value on physical prowess and power. Kevin's brilliance and imagination are his greatest assets. Students can reflect on the struggles faced by both characters because of their weaknesses and how the characters decide to help each other out because of these weaknesses.
Track Progress and Growth
Watch how Max and Kevin develop and alter as the narrative progresses. Do they get greater self-assurance, empathy, or self-awareness? How are they shaped by their experiences? Ask the students to focus on these open-ended questions and reflect on the analysis to find out the reason for this development.
Discuss Roles and Significance
Analyze the role that Max and Kevin play in the story as a whole. How do they advance the story's storyline, and what effect do they have on the other characters? Students can also discuss the relevance and importance of both the characters to the story. For instance, what would have happened if Max did not have learning disabilities or Kevin did not have physical disabilities?
Use Venn Diagrams
Introduce students to the concept of Venn diagrams for a side by side comparison of the characters. Venn diagrams are easy to make, are visually appealing and students can compare more than two characters on this diagram. Teachers can show a few samples of some other comparisons done on Venn diagrams just for some guidance.
