  • I... uh... no, wait, I don't... what?!
  • Numerator: Denominator:
  • "No! Not fractions!"
  • "Hmm, just as I suspected - Fractionaphobia!"
  • "We're all doomed!"

  • Imagine if you will: A Cookie!
  • 2
  • 1
  • part
  • whole
  • You and your friend each want the cookie, but there is only one.
  • You got it!
  • In a moment of pure genius and generosity, you split the cookie into two equal pieces.
  • Mmmm. Cookies
  • The amount of cookie has not changed. Together, the two pieces still make one whole cookie.
  • Each piece is only part of the whole cookie. You and your friend each get half, or 1/2, of a cookie.
  • When writing the fraction, the number of pieces we are talking about, the part of the whole, goes on top.
  • The number of pieces that makes the whole goes on the bottom of our fraction.
  • "So, a fraction can show an amount that is more than nothing, but less than the whole thing!"
  • Now everyone can share their cookies!
