- The story takes place in Naomi, Florida, probably sometime in the 1960s. Opal lives with her father in an all adult trailer park.
- Slide: 2
- Opal's dad is the preacher at the The Open Arms Baptist Church. It isn't like any other church; it was built inside of an old supermarket! People bring their own lawn chairs to sit in.
- Slide: 3
- Opal helps out Otis at Gertrude's Pets so that she can get Winn-Dixie a collar. She loves to bring Winn-Dixie with her, and loves to hear Otis play the guitar for all of the animals; it's as if he puts them into a trance.
