Leon Leyson was just shy of ten years old when the Germans invaded Krakow, Poland, where he lived with his parents and siblings. For Leon and his family, 1939 was the start of several years of misery, starvation, torment, inconceivable inhumanity, and loss. The Boy on the Wooden Box is an important memoir of a boy who survived the most horrific time in world history.

Storyboard Text
- Mother
- Father
- Hershel
- Leon
- Mother was kind and gentle. She spent her days cooking, cleaning, and caring for her children. She survived the Holocaust.
- Father was a provider and a brave man. Leon describes him as a tall and handsome man who took pride in his appearance. He was sent to help Oskar Schindler break open a safe, and Schindler gave him a job. That chance encounter saved his life, and the life of his wife and 3 of his children.
- Hershel is Leon's older brother. The oldest of the 5, Hershel was tough and headstrong. He rebelled against his parents and refused to go to school, saying he wanted to do something more useful. He returned to Narewka early on, and it was later discovered that he did not survive.
- Tsalig
- Leon was the youngest and was adventurous and inquisitive. He was only 9 when the Holocaust changed his life. He would do anything for his family, and often acted in careless ways that could've gotten him killed. Leon survived and went on to speak about his experience throughout the U.S. and Canada.
- Pesza
- The Leyson Family
- David
- Tsalig was Leon's brother who was 6 years older. He was gentle, kind, and was like a superhero to Leon. Tsalig was transported because he didn't have work papers, and when Schindler tried to save him, he refused to leave his girlfriend. He did not survive.
- Pesza was Leon's older sister, and the only girl sibling. She was favored by their parents and was quiet and obedient. Pesza survived the Holocaust.
- David was a little over a year older than Leon and his closest companion. He was a prankster and the two boys did everything together. David survived the Holocuast.
