Little Charlie was sick for quite some time, but wasn't able to see a doctor until the family arrived at Fort Monroe. He died shortly after their arrival, and Callie, Hampton, and Ruth were completely devastated. Callie had a hard time getting out of bed for days.

Mister Henry had promised Hampton that because they are his blood, Charlie and Callie would never be sold. Joseph and Ruth did not fall under this promise, and the family was devastated when 15 year old Joseph was sold right in front of them in the farm yard.
