COURAGE
Callie is a very bright girl who wants to learn. When she is able to go to school at Fort Monroe, she does all that she can to help and be with her teacher, Mrs. Peake.
Set in the 1860s when slavery still existed, freedom is the central theme of this novel. Hampton is a freedman, and he wants his family to be free as well.
I will be back soon. This could be our chance for freedom.
Hampton shows a great deal of courage when he saves a Union soldier from drowning, even though he knew it was risky.
