  • Connie and her mama go shopping downtown and Connie is hungry for a banana split. Mama says they can't sit at the counter, it's for white people only. A banana split at home just isn't the same.
  • Connie sees her brother's friends sitting at the counter and not being served. They sit peacefully until the counter has to close. Soon, people are doing this all over the South, including Connie's brother and sister. Her sister even goes to jail!
  • While downtown that summer, Connie and her parents see black folks being served at the counter! Times have changed. Connie sits at the counter and orders the best banana split that she's ever had.
