  • More than half of the battles during the Civil War were fought in Virginia. It was at the Appomattox Court House in Appomattox County, Virginia that the Confederate Army surrendered on April 9, 1865, ending the Civil War.
  • The first peanuts in the United States were grown in Virginia in the early 1800s. They were used for food, oil, and as a substitute for cocoa.
