Early Humans: Lessons and Student Activities

By Liane Hicks

Millions of years ago, our ancestors survived in a very different environment than we have today. Storyboard Text

  • HUNTING AND GATHERING
  • PALEOLITHIC "OLD STONE" AGE3 MILLION-12,000 YEARS AGO
  • FARMING
  • NEOLITHIC "NEW STONE" AGE12,000-3,000 YEARS AGO
  • In the old stone age, early humans were nomadic. They moved from place to place to hunt animals and gather food such as wild fruits, vegetables, and berries.
  • CAVE DWELLINGS
  • In the new stone age, people farmed in permanent settlements and raised or herded animals. They grew crops such as corn, wheat, and beans, which created a more stable food supply.
  • MUD BRICK HOMES SUPPORTED BY TIMBER
  • Paleolithic people lived in the mouths of caves as well as huts and skin tents. They created paintings on cave walls.
  • STONE, ANIMAL SKINS, SMALL GROUPS
  • Neolithic people created more permanent homes out of mud bricks or huts supported by mud and timber.
  • STONE, CLOTH, LARGER GROUPS
  • Paleolithic people made tools from chipped stone and wood. They were taller and it appears they lived longer than Neolithic people. They lived in tribal groups of up to 50 people.
  • Neolithic people created stone tools that were polished and made sharper by grinding. They wore animals skins as well as woven garments. They had lower life expectancy because of diseases like tooth cavities and typhoid. Women had more children and they lived in larger groups.
