The Vietnam War

By Liane Hicks

Storyboard Text

  • HOW did it end?
  • Casualties: 2,000,000 Vietnamese civilians on both sides; 1,100,000 North Vietnamese, Viet Cong armed forces;250,000 South Vietnamese armed forces; 58,300 U.S. armed forces
  • WHO was involved?
  • WHAT was it?
  • North Vietnamese forces ended the war when seizing control of all of South Vietnam in 1975. The country became the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. Roughly 2,700,000 Americans served. There were far too many tragic casualties: 2,000,000 Vietnamese civilians on both sides. Of the armed forces: 1,100,000 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong; 250,000 South Vietnamese; 58,300 US; 4,000 South Korean, 500 Australian, and 350 Thailand.
  • The Vietnam War was fought between North Vietnam and South Vietnam. Communist North Vietnam was supported by communist countries: the Soviet Union, China, and North Korea. South Vietnam was supported by anti-communist countries, primarily the U.S., but also South Korea, Thailand, Australia, New Zealand, and the Philippines.
  • The Vietnam War was a long and tragic conflict between the communist government of North Vietnam, their contingent in the South, the Viet Cong, and the government of South Vietnam and the U.S. It was part of the Cold War, as the U.S. got involved to stop the spread of Communism. The long, brutal war cost millions of lives both military and civilian and was very controversial.
  • WHY did it start?
  • The Vietnam War: 5 Ws & H
  • WHERE did it happen?
  • WHEN did it happen?
  • Nov 1, 1955 –Apr 30, 1975
  • Ho Chi Minh rose to power as head of the Communist North Vietnamese government and overthrew the French who had colonized Vietnam. The aim of the North was to unify the country under communism. The U.S. provided funding, weapons, and training to South Vietnam in order to keep South Vietnam separate and anti-communist. When tensions escalated, the U.S. expanded its efforts and sent in ground troops, creating an all out war.
  • Vietnam is located south of China and east of Laos and Cambodia. Most of the fighting occurred in Vietnam itself, but there was also fighting in Laos and Cambodia.

However, like much of the war, its beginning is complicated. The last U.S. troops were pulled out of Vietnam during the fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975.
