Reconstruction Era in the US

Reconstruction Era

Lesson Plans by Matt Campbell

Following the Civil War, the United States government quickly discovered that there were still many battles ahead. From how to integrate its newly freed slave population to how to reincorporate the very same Southern states who just fought against them in a war, the Reconstruction Era was not an easy time in U.S. history, and lasted from 1863 to 1877.

  • Surrender at Appomatox
  • On March 3rd, 1865, Congress established the Freedmen's Bureau to help millions of former black slaves and poor whites in the South in the aftermath of the Civil War. The main success of the Freedmen's Bureau was the creation of over 1000 schools and colleges for African Americans.
  • Juneteenth
  • On April 9th, 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered his 28,000 troops to Union General Ulysses S. Grant at the Appomattox Court House. Although scattered troops would still need to be informed, this surrender effectively ended the American Civil War.
  • On June 19th 1865, Union Soldiers landed in Galveston Texas with the news that both the Civil War had ended and the enslaved were now free. Since 1865, "Juneteenth", otherwise known as Freedom Day, has been celebrated in recognition of the emancipation of slaves throughout the United States.

  • XIII
  • On December 6th, 1865, the 13th Amendment was ratified as part of the United States Constitution. Following years of both military and legislative battles, the United States formally denounced and outlawed slavery throughout the country.
  • Georgia Becomes Last Confederate To Be Readmitted To The United States
  • On July 15th, 1870, Georgia became the final Confederate state to be readmitted to the United States. After 11 states seceded the Union, 10 of them had decided to become readmitted to the U.S. With the readmission of Georgia, many view this date as the final major moment needed to reconstruct the torn country.
