Storyboard Text

  • THALES OF MILETUS
  • ELECTRICITY MILESTONES
  • Thales found that if amber was rubbed with animal fur, it could attract light objects such as a feather or seeds. This is due to what we now know as static electricity.
  • BENJAMIN FRANKLIN
  •
  • Benjamin Franklin discovered that lightning and electricity were the same using a kite, a key, and a leyden jar (an early capacitor).
  • LUIGI GALVANI
  • ALESSANDRO VOLTA
  • Galvani found that he could make frogs legs move when they were connected to different types of metals.
  • MICHAEL FARADAY
  • Alessandro Volta created the first battery. The voltaic pile produced a current and was made by stacking different metals separated by paper that had been soaked in a salt solution.
  • Faraday discovered electromagetic induction by passing a magnet through a coil of wire. The unit for capacitance, the Farad, is named after him.
  • FIRST TOWN WITH A PUBLIC ELECTRICITY SUPPLY
  • Godalming was the first town in the world to have a public electricity supply. A generator was connected to a waterwheel.
