Brief History of Nevada
Thousands of years ago, Native American tribes such as the Washoe, Western Shoshone, and Northern and Southern Paiute lived on the land we now know as Nevada. Spain claimed the land in 1519, and it became part of Mexico many years later in 1821. After the Mexican-American War ended in 1848, the area was taken over by the United States. Shortly after the Gold Rush, silver and gold were discovered in the area in 1859, and many people migrated to and settled in the area in hopes of becoming rich.
Students will create a historical timeline, a postcard, a spider map, and a fun facts storyboard showing what they have learned about Nevada. Creating these visuals gives the students the opportunity to show their creativity and their unique view of the state that they have researched. In addition, the combined use of words and illustrations allows students with different learning styles to show what they know in an exciting and eye-catching way.
