SOUTHERN SUDAN: 1985
REFUGEE CAMPS
THE DESERT
But my feet. They hurt so badly!
We must continue on, Salva.
Salva is first introduced in 1985, in his village in Southern Sudan. It is torn apart by civil war, and the conditions are terrifying and dangerous. The climate is hot, dry, and uncomfortable.
The refugee camps where Salva lived differed a little bit, but not much. They were overcrowded, there was little food, and oftentimes the camps were surrounded by barbed wire fences.
Much of Salva's journey took place walking through the hot, dry, arid desert. He walked for years in the sweltering heat without shoes on his feet.
