Storyboard Description

The setting in literature is the location and time, or the where and when of the story, and often plays a crucial role as is the case in Anne of Green Gables. The setting of Green Gables in Avonlea of Prince Edward Island in Canada is almost like another character. In this activity students can map out the different places that Anne cherishes during her time growing up in Avonlea.

  • Avonlea is the fictional village where Anne of Green Gables is set. The author L. M. Montgomery is said to have modeled it after her own village of Cavendish. Anne remarks in wonder at the beautiful natural setting, such as the "lake of shining waters" and the "white way of delight."
  • Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert reside on their small family farm, Green Gables. It features a white farmhouse with a green gabled roof and shutters, along with a magnificent cherry tree that Anne admires from her window. She calls it "The Snow Queen" when its petals turned white.
