Kira-Kira by Cynthia Kadohata

By Liane Hicks

Kira-Kira is about a Japanese American family living in Georgia in the 1950s. The story is told through the eyes of young Katie, full of wonder and mischief, who adores her older sister Lynn. Their parents work in a poultry processing plant and the reader is given a glimpse into the unjust working conditions of the time as well as the racism Katie and her family faced as one of only a few Japanese American families in town.

Storyboard Description

Having students choose a favorite quote or scene from the book allows them to express which parts of the story resonated with them on a personal level. In this way, students are making a text-to-self connection that demonstrates their understanding of the characters and their development or the themes of the novel. Students can share their storyboards afterwards and have a short discussion about what the quotes mean to them.
